New Year gifts for your boss: 5 ideas that feel thoughtful, not like a bribe
You want to say thank you for the year without looking like you are angling for a promotion. Five New Year gifts for your boss, sorted by the kind of boss you have, with real prices and how to give it well.

Last updated 22 October 2026 by Tim Grassin, founder and head pastry chef at Ondine.
The short answer: the best New Year gift for your boss is small, personal and easy to accept: good coffee or tea they will actually drink, a box of something sweet they can share with the team, a desk plant, or a quiet luxury for their room. Our rule of thumb: spend a few hundred baht up to about 1,500, keep it under 3,000 baht if your boss is a state official, and hand it over in person, with both hands, before the holiday.
A New Year gift for your boss is a thank-you, not a bid
Giving upward is awkward. Too little looks careless. Too much looks like you want something. And everyone in the office will see it.
The fix is to treat it as a thank-you for the year, and nothing more. One small gift, chosen for the person, handed over with a short card. That is the whole job.
Sweet things and coffee are already a common New Year choice in Bangkok. In a Ban Somdet Poll of 1,145 Bangkok residents (23 to 26 December 2025, reported by The Bangkok Insight on 29 December 2025), "chocolate, cookies, cakes and coffee" came second among the New Year gifts people give (18.3%), and cash or cash vouchers came third (14.8%).
If your boss is a state official, 3,000 baht is the line to know
If your boss works in government or a state enterprise, there is a real limit. A 2020 notice from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (published in the Royal Gazette on 13 March 2020) says a state official may accept a gift from someone who is not a relative only if it is worth no more than 3,000 baht, from each person, on each occasion. If an official has to accept more than that out of necessity, they must report it to the head of their agency within 30 days.
Every idea below is under 3,000 baht. The notice covers state officials only. In a private company, check whether your firm has its own gift policy. Our view: a modest gift is the safe default anywhere.

The right gift depends on the boss: 5 New Year ideas, from 280 to 1,650 baht
These are our own picks, sorted by the kind of boss you have rather than by price. Prices are from each seller's own website, checked on 22 October 2026.
| # | If your boss... | Example | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Runs on coffee | Akha Ama Coffee Peaberry, 250 g | 280 baht |
| 2 | Drinks tea | Monsoon Tea BKK Blends Tea Box Set, three 50 g tins | 1,090 baht |
| 3 | Shares everything with the team | Ondine Signature 5 (or Petite 3) | ฿450 (฿290) |
| 4 | Has a bare desk | UrbanFlowers Sansevieria Starfish in a porcelain pot | 1,090 baht |
| 5 | Has everything | Karmakamet Original Room Perfume Diffuser, 190 ml | 1,450 to 1,650 baht |
1. The boss who runs on coffee: beans from a Thai roaster get used every morning
If the first thing your boss does each morning is make coffee, give them better coffee. It gets used, and it gets remembered every morning.
- The gift: Akha Ama Coffee Peaberry, a 250 g bag of medium roast, 280 baht. You can order it as whole beans or ground for filter, French press, moka pot or espresso.
- Tip: ask a colleague how your boss makes coffee before you choose the grind. Wrong grind, wasted gift.
2. The boss who drinks tea: a set they try tin by tin beats one big pack
In our experience, a tea drinker likes variety more than volume. A set of small tins lets them try a few without committing to one.
- The gift: the Monsoon Tea BKK Blends Tea Box Set, three 50 g tins named after Bangkok places (Lumpini, Sukhumvit and Chao Phraya), 1,090 baht.
- Tip: if your boss is not from Bangkok, the Bangkok names make a nice talking point.
3. The boss who shares everything: one box gives the whole team a taste
A note on our own idea: Ondine bakes madeleines, so we have an obvious interest here. We put it third and kept the price as clear as everything else.
Some bosses open a gift and pass it round the team straight away. For them, give something that is easy to share round the desk.
- The gift: an Ondine Signature 5, five madeleines for ฿450, or a Petite 3, three for ฿290. Each comes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card, so the card is already sorted.
- Tip: if a few of you want to give together, one Signature 5 from the team is cleaner than five separate gifts.

4. The boss with a bare desk: a plant is a gift they see every day
A plant sits on the desk every working day. It also says "new year, fresh start" without anyone having to say it.
- The gift: the UrbanFlowers Sansevieria Starfish, delivered in a porcelain pot, 1,090 baht. UrbanFlowers offers 3-hour delivery in Bangkok if you order by 5 PM.
- Tip: send it to the office the morning of your last working day before the holiday, so it is there when they arrive.
5. The boss who has everything: a room scent is a luxury they rarely buy themselves
Senior bosses may already have the gadgets, the pens and the hampers. A good scent for their office or home is a small luxury they rarely buy for themselves.
- The gift: the Karmakamet Original Room Perfume Diffuser, 190 ml, 1,450 to 1,650 baht depending on the scent. It is a reed diffuser, so it needs no electricity or heat.
- Tip: pick a soft, familiar scent over a strong one. A shared office is not the place for a bold choice.
Ondine has no tie to Akha Ama Coffee, Monsoon Tea, UrbanFlowers or Karmakamet. Prices and stock can change, so check the seller's page before you order.

How you hand it over matters as much as the gift
These are our own tips, not survey findings.
- Give it before the holiday, in person. New Year's Day 2027 falls on a Friday, so aim for the last few working days of December.
- Use both hands, or your right hand. It is the polite way to give in Thailand. Our Thai gift etiquette guide covers the rest, from wrapping to what to avoid.
- Do not out-give your boss. If they give the team something small, match the spirit, not the price.
- Add a short card. Two lines of thanks beat a long speech. Our New Year wish card messages post has lines for a boss.
- Do not expect them to open it in front of you. As our etiquette guide notes, many Thais open gifts later, to be polite. That is not a bad sign.
A box of madeleines is a thank-you your boss can share today

Questions
Should I give my boss a New Year gift?
You do not have to, but a small New Year gift is a normal way to say thank you for the year in Thailand. Our view: keep it modest, give it in person before the holiday, and let the thank-you carry it, not the price.
How much should I spend on a New Year gift for my boss?
Our view: a few hundred baht up to about 1,500 covers most bosses, and the five ideas in this guide run from 280 to 1,650 baht. If you want to give something bigger, chip in with your team and give one gift together.
Is there a limit if my boss is a government official?
Yes. Under a 2020 notice from Thailand's National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), a state official may accept a gift from someone who is not a relative only if it is worth no more than 3,000 baht from each person, on each occasion. Every idea in this guide is under that.
Can I give my boss cash or a gift card for New Year?
Cash and cash vouchers came third among New Year gifts in a 2025 Ban Somdet Poll of 1,145 Bangkok residents (14.8%). Our view: they work for family, but between you and your boss they can feel like a transaction. Something chosen for them reads better.
What should I write on a New Year card for my boss?
Keep it short and warm: thank them for the year and wish them a good one ahead. Our guide to New Year wish card messages has lines for a boss you can copy in Thai and English.
Can Ondine deliver a box to my boss?
Yes. We bake every morning and deliver across central Bangkok by Grab Express, Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Sundays. A Signature 5 is five madeleines for ฿450 and a Petite 3 is three for ฿290, each in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card.
