New Year gifts instead of a hamper: 6 ideas, by situation

One thing they will love, chosen just for them, feels like you. Here are six New Year gifts that aren't a hamper, sorted by situation, with real prices checked this week.

Short answer: instead of a New Year hamper, give one thing chosen for the person: a tea set for the tea lover, flowers for someone you want to see smile, good coffee for the friend who brews at home, a box of small cakes for the family table, scented candles for someone who loves their home, or a gift card when you cannot be there. A hamper is still a lovely choice for a big household that enjoys a generous spread. Whatever you pick, add a few words in your own hand.

You know the feeling. It is the first visit of the year, and you are standing at the door with something in your arms. You want them to open it later and think: she knows me. Not: another one.

This guide sorts six hamper alternatives by situation, not from best to worst, because the right gift for your partner's mother is not the right gift for the friend who lives on iced coffee. Every example has a real price, checked on 17 October 2026.

A hamper is still right for some homes

A hamper is a generous gift, and in some homes it is exactly right. Give one when:

  • The household is big. A spread of many things means everyone finds something.
  • It is the family tradition. If a hamper has gone to grandma's house every New Year, the hamper is part of the visit.
  • You do not know their taste at all. Variety covers more bases than a single guess.

This is our view, not a rule. If one of these fits, buy the hamper with a clear conscience and skip to the tips at the end.

One gift chosen for one person feels personal

A single gift chosen for one person feels like you chose it for them, because you did. That is the whole case. It is also easier to carry, easier to hand over with both hands, and leaves less wrapping behind. Again, this is our view.

Three questions help you choose:

  • Would they pick this for themselves? The tea they already drink, the colour they always wear, the scent they light at home.
  • Can they enjoy it soon? A gift that gets used this month is a gift they remember.
  • Does it come with words? Two handwritten lines turn any gift into your gift.

6 New Year gifts instead of a hamper, by situation

1. For in-laws or elders who love their tea: a tea gift set. A good tea is something they can enjoy every morning, and every cup is a small thank you from you. For example, Monsoon Tea's BKK Blends Tea Box Set, three 50 g tins named after Bangkok places, is 1,090 baht on its own site. Tip: ask a family member which tea they drink now, then choose a nicer version of that.

2. For a partner or friend you want to see light up: flowers. Flowers are a gift for the moment itself: the door opens, and there is colour. For example, UrbanFlowers' Pretty Woman pink gerbera bouquet is 1,990 baht on its own site. Tip: pick bright colours, and skip flowers used at funerals, which our Thai gift etiquette guide lists among the gifts many people avoid.

3. For the colleague or friend who brews coffee at home: a bag of good beans. Chocolate, cookies, cake and coffee came second among New Year gift types in a December 2025 Ban Somdet Poll of 1,145 Bangkok residents, at 18.3%. For example, Akha Ama Coffee's WANWAN medium roast, 250 g is 280 baht on its own site. Tip: the page offers whole beans or several grinds, so find out how they brew first.

4. For a family visit where everyone shares: a box of small cakes. After the meal, a box that goes around the table brings everyone in, and nobody has to cut anything. This is what we make. Ondine bakes madeleines in Bangkok: small shell-shaped cakes with a crisp golden edge and a soft middle. The Signature 5 holds five madeleines for 450 baht, and the Petite 3 holds three for 290 baht. Every box goes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card.

5. For the friend who loves her home: scented candles. A candle is a gift for the evenings after the visit, when she lights it and thinks of you. For example, Karmakamet's Aromatic Petite Glass Candle set, three 60 g candles in one box, is 990 baht on its own site. Tip: the page lets you pick from three scents, so choose the one that suits her home.

6. When you cannot be there, or cannot guess their taste: a gift card. Cash or gift cards came third in the same Ban Somdet Poll, at 14.8%. A card lets them choose, and it travels well. For example, the Central "A Gift For You" gift card for 1,000 baht is sold on Central Online. Its page says it can be used at Central department stores, ZEN and Marks & Spencer (not at rented shops inside them) and is sent by post, 3 to 5 days within Bangkok and nearby. Tip: tuck it into a card with two handwritten lines.

The example prices come from each seller's own site or Central Online, checked on 17 October 2026, and they can change. We have no tie to these sellers, and the examples are sorted by situation, not ranked.

A note on our own idea: Ondine makes madeleines, so we have an obvious interest in idea 4. We placed it by situation, not at the top, and the poll figures are Ban Somdet's, not ours.

How much should you spend instead of a hamper?

Spend what you can give easily. A small gift chosen for one person can mean more than a big one chosen for anyone. The Ban Somdet Poll did not ask about budgets, so we have no average to give you. As a guide, the examples above run from 280 to 1,990 baht. Visiting grandparents? Our guide to New Year gifts for elders goes deeper. Practical tips for giving it well

  1. Order early. Central's page says its gift card goes by post, 3 to 5 days within Bangkok and nearby, so do not leave it for the last week of December.
  2. Take the price tag off and wrap brightly. Our Thai gift etiquette guide explains why presentation counts as much as price.
  3. Give with both hands. For an elder, a small wai first, then both hands or the right hand.
  4. Let them open it later. Do not ask them to open it in front of you. The same guide notes that many Thais open gifts later, to be polite.
  5. Write two lines. One thank you for this year, one wish for the next. Stuck? Here is what to write on a New Year wish card.
  6. Ask before you guess. One quiet message to a sibling or a cousin ("which tea does Mum drink now?") turns a guess into a gift you know they want.

A box for the family table

We bake every morning and deliver across central Bangkok by Grab Express (roughly Bang Sue to Bang Na, and Thon Buri to Bang Kapi), Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Sundays, often the same day. Every box goes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card that carries your message.

The Petite 3 (฿290) holds three madeleines, a small hello. The Signature 5 (฿450) holds five, for a table where someone always wants the last one.

See the Signature 5 or choose your box. If a batch is gone when you look, you can put your name down for the next one.

Questions

What can I give instead of a New Year hamper?

Pick one thing chosen for the person: a tea set for a tea lover, flowers for someone you want to see smile, good coffee for a friend who brews at home, a box of small cakes for a family table, scented candles for someone who loves their home, or a gift card when you cannot be there or cannot guess their taste.

Is a hamper still a good New Year gift?

Yes, in the right home. A hamper suits a big household that enjoys a generous spread, a family where it is the tradition, or a visit where you want something for everyone at once. This is our view, not a rule.

Is a gift card a polite New Year gift in Thailand?

It is common. In a December 2025 Ban Somdet Poll of 1,145 Bangkok residents, cash or gift cards came third among New Year gift types, at 14.8%. Put it inside a card with a few handwritten words so it reads as care, not a payment.

How much should I spend on a New Year gift instead of a hamper?

Spend what you can give easily. The poll did not ask about budgets, so there is no average to quote. The examples in this guide run from 280 to 1,990 baht, checked on 17 October 2026.

How should I hand over a New Year gift to an elder?

Take the price tag off, wrap it neatly in a bright colour, greet them with a small wai, and hand it over with both hands or the right hand. Do not expect them to open it in front of you.

What comes with an Ondine box?

Every Ondine box goes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card that carries your message. The Petite 3 holds three madeleines for 290 baht and the Signature 5 holds five for 450 baht.
