New Year gifts for elders: what to give, by situation

Pick something an elder can enjoy right away and share with whoever is home. In a December 2025 Ban Somdet Poll of 1,145 people in Bangkok, food and drinks for health came first among New Year gifts, then chocolate, cookies, cake and coffee.

Short answer: for a New Year gift to an elder, pick something they can enjoy right away and share with whoever is home: good food, a treat for tea or coffee, or a small thing they will use every day. When Ban Somdet Poll asked 1,145 people in Bangkok about New Year gifts in December 2025, food and drinks for health came first, at 27.7%, followed by chocolate, cookies, cake and coffee, at 18.3%. Then add a few words in your own handwriting. That part costs nothing, and we think it is the part that matters most.

Every New Year there is one visit you plan with a little more care. Your grandmother. The aunt who always saves you the best seat. Your partner's parents, the first year you visit together. You want to walk in with something in your hands that says you thought about them, not just about the date.

This guide sorts the usual gift ideas by situation, not from best to worst, because the right gift for a boss's mother is not the right gift for your own grandmother.

What do people in Bangkok actually give at New Year?

Food comes first. In the Ban Somdet Poll, run by Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University with 1,145 Bangkok residents from 23 to 26 December 2025, these were the top New Year gift types:

Gift typeShare
Food and drinks for health27.7%
Chocolate, cookies, cake, coffee18.3%
Cash or gift cards14.8%
Jewellery (necklaces, rings, watches)9.1%
Clothes7.9%
Fresh fruit7.5%

Herbal products, perfume, electrical appliances and drinks with alcohol made up the rest, with alcohol last at 2.5%. The poll asked about New Year gifts in general, not gifts for elders, so read it as a picture of what Bangkok gives, not a rule for your family.

What makes a good New Year gift for an elder?

A good gift for an elder is easy to enjoy and easy to share. Many elders already have the things they need, so a gift that adds clutter, needs instructions or sits in a cupboard misses the point. This is our view, not the poll's.

Three questions help:

  • Can they enjoy it today? A gift opened during your visit is a moment you share. A gift saved for later is a moment you miss.
  • Can the whole table share it? New Year visits are rarely one on one. Something that gets passed around brings everyone in.
  • Does it show you know them? Their favourite tea, the colour they always wear, the snack they buy for themselves. Small, specific and right beats big and generic.

The best New Year gift for an elder is one they open in front of you, then pass around the table.

Six New Year gift ideas for elders, by situation

1. They always say "don't buy me anything." Give something they would buy for themselves anyway, just a nicer version: the tea or coffee they drink every morning, or the fruit they love. Fresh fruit made the poll's top six at 7.5%. It gets used, so nobody has to find a place for it. For example, Monsoon Tea's Thai Breakfast tea bags are 340 baht on its own site.

2. You are visiting the house and the family will be there. Bring something sweet the whole table can share after the meal, with tea or coffee. Chocolate, cookies, cake and coffee were the second most chosen New Year gift type in the poll, at 18.3%. A box of small cakes works because everyone can take one without cutting anything. For example, a Danisa cookie gift set (454 g) is 199 baht at Villa Market, and our own boxes are further down.

3. They are careful about what they eat. Food and drinks for health topped the poll, at 27.7%. Ask a family member what they already enjoy before you choose, so the gift fits what they actually eat rather than what a label promises.

4. A parent or grandparent you are close to. Something to wear or keep: a piece of jewellery (9.1% in the poll) or clothes (7.9%) in a colour they love. Choose something they could wear to the next family gathering, so you get to see it again. For example, Pandora's Blue Cord Snake Chain Bracelet is 4,200 baht on Pandora's Thai site.

5. You cannot be there in person. Cash or a gift card came third in the poll, at 14.8%. It is practical, and it travels well. Put it inside a card with a few handwritten lines so it feels like you, not a transfer.

6. A formal elder, like your boss's parent or a family friend you see once a year. Keep it classic and easy to present: a neat box of sweets, good tea or fruit. Skip alcohol unless you know they drink. It came last in the poll, at 2.5%. For example, Monsoon Tea's BKK Blends Tea Box Set, three 50 g tins, is 1,090 baht on its own site.

The example prices come from each seller's own site or a Thai retailer, prices checked on 10 October 2026, and they can change. We have no tie to these sellers, and the examples are not ranked.

A note on our own ideas: Ondine makes madeleines in Bangkok, so we have an obvious interest in idea 2. We placed it by situation, not at the top, and the poll figures are Ban Somdet's, not ours.

How much should you spend on a New Year gift for an elder?

Spend what you can give easily. With elders, care counts more than price, and a small gift chosen for them lands better than an expensive one chosen for anyone. The poll did not ask about budgets, so we have no average to give you. As a guide, the examples on this page run from 199 to 4,200 baht. For office gift exchanges, where budgets are set, see our guide to Secret Santa gifts under 500 baht.

How do you make a small gift feel personal?

Write something by hand and give it in person if you can. In the same poll, 43.8% planned to send New Year wishes by message on Facebook, Instagram, LINE or TikTok, while 32.2% planned to visit in person. A handwritten line is the part of a gift that does not get eaten, used or spent.

Two lines are enough. Name one thing you are thankful for this year and one thing you wish them for the next. If you know a little Thai, a short สวัสดีปีใหม่ค่ะ (or ครับ) in your own hand means a lot.

Where Ondine fits

If you go with idea 2, this is what we make. Ondine bakes madeleines in Bangkok: small shell-shaped cakes with a crisp golden edge and a soft middle, easy to pass around a table. (New to them?) The Signature 5 holds five madeleines for 450 baht, and the Petite 3 holds three for 290 baht. Every box goes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card, so the handwritten part comes with it.

The short version

  • Pick something an elder can enjoy today and share with the family.
  • Food led Bangkok's New Year gifts in the Ban Somdet Poll: food and drinks for health (27.7%), then chocolate, cookies, cake and coffee (18.3%).
  • Match the gift to the situation: a nicer everyday treat for "don't buy me anything", something to share for a family visit, cash in a card when you cannot be there.
  • Skip alcohol unless you know they drink.
  • Add two handwritten lines. We think that is the part that matters most.

Questions

What is a good New Year gift for an elder in Thailand?

Something they can enjoy straight away and share with whoever is at home: good food, a treat to have with tea or coffee, or a small thing they will use every day. In a December 2025 Ban Somdet Poll of 1,145 Bangkok residents, food and drinks for health came first among New Year gifts at 27.7%, followed by chocolate, cookies, cake and coffee at 18.3%.

Is cash an acceptable New Year gift for an elder?

It is common. Cash or a gift card came third in the same Ban Somdet Poll, at 14.8%. If you give cash, put it in a card with a few handwritten words so it reads as care, not a payment.

Should I give alcohol to an elder at New Year?

Only if you know they enjoy it. Drinks with alcohol came last of the ten gift types in the Ban Somdet Poll, at 2.5%, so it is the riskiest pick when you are not sure.

What comes with an Ondine box?

Every Ondine box goes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card, so you can write a few words for the person you are visiting. The Petite 3 holds three madeleines for 290 baht and the Signature 5 holds five for 450 baht.
