A gift for yourself: 5 small ways to treat yourself in Bangkok

You remember everyone's birthday, bring something to every dinner and send flowers when it matters. This one is for you. Five small ways to give yourself a gift in Bangkok, and why it is worth doing.

The short answer: a gift for yourself is something small you choose on purpose, for a reason you can name: a hard week, a win, a birthday, a quiet Saturday. In a Thai study of 400 people who had recently bought themselves a gift, the top reason was simply wanting to be good to themselves. Pick the moment first, then the gift, and make it feel like a gift: wrapped, delivered, or opened slowly.

Buying yourself a gift is not selfish, it is overdue

Most of us are good at giving. We remember the boss's birthday, bring something to every dinner and know exactly what a friend's mother likes. Then a long month ends, and nobody hands us anything.

A gift for yourself fixes that. It is not the same as shopping. Shopping is "I need a new charger". A gift is "I did something hard, and I want to mark it".

Researchers have written about this since at least 1990. A paper in the STOU Academic Journal of Research and Innovation (Vol. 4 No. 2, July to December 2024), by Nuttinee Wattanaboon and Chompunuch Punyapiroje of Burapha University, sums up the classic view from Mick and DeMoss (1990): people give themselves gifts to feel good, to reward themselves after reaching a goal, to cheer themselves up when they feel low, and to celebrate a special day.

A Thai study of 400 self-gifters found it is personal, and rarely huge

The same paper surveyed 400 Thai consumers aged 20 and over who had bought themselves a gift in the past six months (an online questionnaire, convenience sample; 69.8% of respondents were women). A few findings stand out:

  • The top three reasons were "when I want to be good to myself", "when I want to reward myself" and "when I have money left over".
  • It is personal. 68.0% said they consult only themselves before buying, and 64.5% go shopping for it alone.
  • Many save up for it. 64.3% save up for it in advance, and 61.3% pay from their own salary.
  • It is not huge. 52.8% spent 1,001 to 5,000 baht, and 20.5% spent under 1,001 baht.
  • Food and drinks are second. Clothes, shoes and accessories came first (81.0%), food and drinks second (60.5%), beauty and skincare third (58.3%).

It is not just Thailand. In a KPMG consumer survey of Americans released on 29 September 2025, 57% said they planned to shop for themselves during the holiday season, with expected spending on themselves up 20% on the year before.

The moment matters more than the price: 5 small ways to give yourself a gift in Bangkok

These are our own ideas, sorted by the moment rather than by price.

1. After a win: the thing you have been saving for

You finished the project, passed the exam or survived the quarter. This is the "reward" gift. For many people it is something to wear: clothes, shoes and accessories were the study's top category.

  • The gift: the piece that has been sitting in your cart for weeks.
  • Tip: decide the reward before you start the goal. It turns a purchase into a finish line.

2. A slow Saturday: an afternoon that belongs to you

Sometimes the gift is time. One unhurried afternoon alone, with a book, a window seat and nowhere to be.

  • The gift: a café you have never tried, on your own. Our slow afternoon cafés in Bangkok guide has six places where you can stay a while, and in the cool season our Bangkok picnic spots guide works too.
  • Tip: leave your laptop at home. If you answer one email, it is no longer a gift.

3. After a long week: something sweet, delivered to your door

A note on our own idea: Ondine bakes madeleines, so we have an obvious interest here. We put it third and kept the price as clear as everything else.

Food and drinks came second in the study, and this is the gift that asks the least of you. You do not have to go anywhere. It comes to you.

  • The gift: an Ondine Petite 3, three madeleines for ฿290, or a Signature 5, five for ฿450. Each comes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card.
  • Tip: fill in the wish card for yourself. "You did well this week" reads differently in print.

4. On your birthday: an hour of being looked after

Celebrating a special day was one of the four classic reasons in the study's framework, and services such as spa and massage, hair, facials, nails or lashes were chosen by 34.0% of the people surveyed.

  • The gift: book the appointment you keep putting off, for your birthday week.
  • Tip: book it for a weekday morning if you can. A quiet salon feels more like a gift than a busy one.

5. On payday: the good version of something you use every day

Beauty and skincare came third in the study (58.3%). The best self-gifts in this group are small upgrades you notice daily.

  • The gift: the nicer hand cream, the better lip balm, the candle you smell every evening.
  • Tip: buy one thing, not five. A single good thing feels like a gift. A basket feels like errands.

A gift for yourself should feel like a gift, not a purchase

These are our rules of thumb, not survey findings.

  1. Name the reason. "For finishing the move" makes it a gift. Without a reason it is just shopping.
  2. Set a budget you will not regret. Most people in the Thai study stayed between 1,001 and 5,000 baht, and many spent less.
  3. Let it arrive. Order it to your door, or wrap it yourself. Unwrapping is half the gift.
  4. Write yourself a line. On a card, in your phone, anywhere. You will read it again.
  5. Open it slowly. Sit down, put your phone away, and enjoy it properly.

Questions

Is it okay to buy a gift for yourself?

Yes. A study of 400 Thai consumers in the STOU Academic Journal found the top reasons people buy themselves a gift are wanting to be good to themselves, wanting to reward themselves, and having some money left over. Our view: none of those is selfish, and a small gift for yourself is a way of saying the week counted.

What do people buy as a gift for themselves?

In the same Thai study, clothes, shoes and accessories came first (81.0%), then food and drinks (60.5%), then beauty and skincare (58.3%). Services such as spa and massage, hair, facials, nails or lashes came next (34.0%), then phones and accessories (33.0%). People could pick more than one.

How much do people spend on a gift for themselves?

In the Thai study, 52.8% spent between 1,001 and 5,000 baht and 20.5% spent under 1,001 baht. A gift for yourself does not need to be big. A box of madeleines, a café afternoon or one good hand cream all count.

How often do people buy themselves a gift?

Most do it when they feel like it rather than on a schedule. In the Thai study, 54.3% said they buy themselves a gift whenever they want to, 10.0% about once a month and 3.5% once a week.

Is self-gifting common outside Thailand?

Yes. In a KPMG consumer survey of Americans released on 29 September 2025, 57% said they planned to shop for themselves during the holiday season, with expected spending on themselves up 20% on the year before.

Can I order an Ondine box for myself?

Of course. A Petite 3 is three madeleines for ฿290 and a Signature 5 is five for ฿450. Every box comes in an Ondine logo bag with a ribbon and a wish card, so you can write yourself a line. We bake every morning and deliver across central Bangkok by Grab Express, Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00, closed on Sundays.
